Schwalbe WINTER HS 396 Active Line Winter KG TS size 26x1.75 wire bicycle tire in black with REFLEX stripe.
Reduced to the most essential features. Despite the reduced to half the number of studs Winter offers excellent control on icy surfaces. Only in extreme gradients does its big brother Marathon Winter prevail. The 50 EPI carcass, reflective stripe and Kevlar Guard protective insert are excellent advantages at a good price.
All the studs in Schwalbe tires have a core made of extremely wear-resistant tungsten carbide, so you can run several thousand kilometers on them. It's normal for the edges of the studs to round off, and for the studs themselves to dig a little deeper into the tire tread.
Studded tires can also be used on normal roads, the studs also bite into normal asphalt roads very well and even fast cornering is not a problem. The only thing that may bother you is the excessive noise when driving on studded tires on dry asphalt.

Rubber compounds
- Dual: Two different rubber compounds for superior performance.
- Endurance: Marathon tire rubber compound for superior durability.
- Energizer: Extremely grippy rubber compound for electric bikes.
- GRC: Gray rubber compound in wheelchair tires.
- One Star Triple Compound : A rubber compound developed specifically for Schwalbe One. The all-new polymer base enables a marked reduction in rolling resistance and cut susceptibility.
- Roller: A special compound for training on a trainer.
- SBC: Schwalbe Basic Compound: A versatile blend of quality rubber for a variety of uses.
- Silica: Special filler in the rubber compound, positively influencing rolling resistance and grip on wet surfaces.
- Speedgrip: Extremely sporty rubber compound with extremely low rolling resistance and exceptional grip.
- Triple Star Compound: Our best and most advanced rubber compounds. Three different compounds perfectly adapted to specific applications. MTB(PaceStar Extremely fast compound for XC, TrailStar Compound for enduro and freeride, VertStar Compound for downhill, GateStar), Roadrace (RaceStar, WetStar), Tour (RoadStar,TravelStar).
- Winter: Special rubber compound for studded tires.
- Black'n Roll: Special rubber compound for wheelchair tires. Leaves no dark marks on the floor. Lasts much longer than gray compound.
Under the tread in Schwalbe tires, you will find anti-puncture inserts. Several types of inserts can be distinguished. The inserts represent different levels of protection against tire punctures, the consequence of which is the puncture of the inner tube.Schwalbe tires on the labels have information about the "Level" of protection, and so in turn:
- Level 1 - Thick warp fabric. Without a protective band. You will not find such tires in Schwalbe.
- Level 2 - High-quality warp fabric without a separate protective band. Only used in super lightweight racing tires.
- Level 3 - K-Guard Schwalbe's minimum standard for an anti-piercing insert. Proven over many years, the insert consists of natural rubber and is reinforced with Kevlar® fibers. Together with the 50 EPI carcass, it provides very good protection in all tires of the Active Line series. Kevlar® is a trademark of DuPont.
- Level 4 - RaceGuard Double layer of nylon fabric. Good protection for lightweight sport tires.
- Level 5 - there are three different inserts.
- V-Guard This high-tech fiber is extremely resistant to cuts, providing a particularly high level of defect protection even in very light tires. In combination with SnakeSkin sidewall protection, we are talking about Double Defense technology.
- GreenGuard An insert with the same principle as SmartGuard, but only about 3 mm thick. Highly flexible, natural rubber is produced from one-third recycled latex products.
- PunctureGuard The same protection is offered by the more affordable PunctureGuard, which, however, is not as flexible.
- Level 6 - SmartGuard The most effective protective liner available in bicycle tires. Simply unbreakable. A solid layer of flexible special rubber offers durable protection, even when "driven in" by sharp objects. Even a pin driven into the tire does not harm it.
Our journey through the tire cross-section is slowly coming to an end. However, what is at the end is usually the most interesting. This is also the case here. We reach the tire carcass. It is from it that the additional characteristics we will later give to the tire depend to the greatest extent. The main parameter of the carcass is EPI, that is, the density of the braid, and the material from which the fibers are made. The greater the EPI/TPI, the more resistant the tire will be to punctures and roll lighter.
- In Schwalbe tires you will find different types of carcass and additional options.
- Dynamic Casing. A special casing construction taken from motorcycle tires provides high flexibility in the tread area, and thus low rolling resistance.
- "Anti-Aging" sidewalls. They can withstand the stresses of under-pressure much longer before ugly cracks appear on them.
- Double Defense - Double protection. High Density Guard + SnakeSkin. You won't find more safety in lightweight off-road tires anywhere.
- Downhill - The most massive tires. Double carcass, Snake-Bite protection, SnakeSkin sidewalls. Wire Tires.
Not to be left out is the tubeless system, which is heavily technologically advanced. It allows higher performance, and minimizes the risk of punctures.
Tubeless system
All Schwalbe Tubeless tires have a sealed liner, the so-called inner liner. Most tire manufacturers now abandon such an insert, and instead integrate a sealed layer into the rubberized outer wall of the tire carcass. While such a construction is lighter, it has serious drawbacks: this layer is more easily damaged and cannot be repaired. Schwalbe recommends: choose a true Tubeless tire or, if weight is critical, a tire with the Tubeless Ready system along with sealing fluid.
Tubeless Ready system
This is a classic tire additionally equipped with a special bead. It can be used with an inner tube or without if you have tubeless wheels + sealing fluid.
Most Tubeless Ready tires additionally have the SnakeSkin system are best suited for conversion to Tubeless! The sidewalls are sealed almost immediately. Most often, half the amount of sealing fluid is already sufficient! The higher weight of the SnakeSkin sidewalls is thus almost cancelled out - and you also get extra protection from sharp stones.
Schwalbe to make it a little easier to navigate among all these system names and tire markings has distinguished three quality groups for its products.
- Evolution Line - Everything the best possible. Materials of the highest quality. The latest technologies.
- Performance Line - Excellent quality for intensive use . These are the tires with the best value for money.
- Active Line - Reliable branded quality.
